Box Office: "The Dark Knight"

Since its release on July 18, 2008, "The Dark Knight" has grossed an astonishing $997,049,935 worldwide -- the fourth-highest grossing film of all time.

In an attempt to cross the $1 billion mark, Warn Bros. re-released the film in traditional and IMAX theaters in the United States this past Friday, January 23, 2009.

Do you think it'll make it? Would crossing the $1 billion mark further the film's chances of winning Oscars?

  3. Wow! That is really interesting! I'm curious to know how many people would go see it in theaters now that its already out on DVD!?!! Is there a precedent for this do you know? Well I feel like there def. are people who might! batman is so huge! I was never even a batman fan and I def. got swept away by the mania of this movie! Watch batman begins for the first time right before going to the premier of dark knight! A solid 6 hours of batman! haha good times. Outstanding movie, heath ledger def. deserves the oscar, but I dont' think the money should influence the chance of it winning the oscar.

  4. Thanks Katie & capslock!

capslock, that's a great point you raise about the possibility of the DVD affecting audience turn-out -- I'll definitely keep you posted with what happens!

Apparently Warner Bros. was planning on re-releasing the film during the height of the voting for the Academy Awards, but nominations were announced before January 23rd. So perhaps the sole goal of bringing it back now is to hop the $1 billion hurdle?
